The early morning chill may feel like fall but we’re not there yet. Today is the last day of summer and it promises to be a beautiful day with a mixture of sun and clouds. The British weather forecasters call this a “sunny spell” day. The nights are going now into the 50s so I am hurrying to bring in the tender plants, but there are more plants than there is space --- they grew and multiplied over the summer.
The fawns have all lost their spots but are still following their mothers and now nibbling at the grass and everything else. The summer birds are leaving – hummingbirds, rosy pauls, robins but the blue jays are still here. The raccoons invade my back deck every night, searching for the leftover cat food.
Outside you can feel the impending fall winds. On mornings like these one just feels the beauty of God’s creation. It is well past time to care for it. That means asking those politicians running for re-election what they rally intend to do beyond shaking their heads at the effects of climate disaster we have endured this past summer.
Prayer for the Day
Refreshing Holy Power of our lives, we search for understanding:
For often we know not where to turn or what to believe,
You have given us the ability to think, discern, and act
So we do not lose the beauty of the earth we inhabit.
Teach us to call those in power to account for their actions
In order that we may preserve the earth and its creatures.
In the name of the One who called all to account,
Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen
Thoughts for the Day
We the people, are the boss, and we will get the kind of political leadership, be it good or bad, that we demand and deserve.
- John F. Kennedy, President (1917-1963)
If you set out to be liked, you would be prepared to compromise on anything at any time, and you would achieve nothing.
- Margaret Thatcher, Former Prime Minister Great Britain (1925-2013)
Our God comes and does not keep silence, before God is a devouring fire,
And a mighty tempest around.
God calls to the heavens above and to the earth, that God’s people may be judged;
“Gather to me my faithful ones, who made a covenant with me by sacrifice!”
The heavens declare God’s righteousness, for God alone is judge.
Psalm 50: 3-6
