Deer and squirrels get into the bird food feeders that they can reach. But they do so in very different ways. One of the bird feeders has a cage around it to allow smaller birds to eat but it also has a top that a squirrel can dislodge. Watching the squirrel try to get back outside the narrow tube, when I go onto the back deck, is pretty funny, especially the fat one that can’t quite make it out so fast.
Deer take a different approach to eat bird food. They’re not so frenetic but are calmer so when I give that doe my “why are you there” look, she just backs off calmly and stares back at me with the “so, where’s my corn?” look.
Deer also are more willing to share. When the deer eat from the feeder, they don’t push out the birds eating the seed from another part of the feeder. We should be more like them than the squirrels who screech at them and push them off. I don’t think I’ve ever heard a deer make a noise. They just smile wagging their little tails and wait for the corn.
Prayer for the Day
River of life, in whom we live and move and have our being,
Quench our thirst, refresh our weariness, and bathe our wounds.
Wellspring of hope, spring up within and among us,
Fill us with your being and grace us with your presence.
Open us to the love that casts out fear so your love is evident in our lives
And help us bring peace into the world through your righteousness.
In the name of him who proclaimed your kingdom,
Even Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen.
Thoughts for the Day
Happiness quite unshared can scarcely be called happiness; it has no taste.
Charlotte Brontë, English novelist (1816–1855)
A bone to the dog is not charity. Charity is the bone shared with the dog when you are just as hungry as the dog.
Jack London, American writer, social activist (1876–1916)
The Lord is near to all who call,
to all who call on God in truth.
The Lord fulfills the desire of all who fear God
for the Lord hears their cry, and saves them.
The Lord watches over all who love the Lord,
but will destroy all the wicked.
Psalm 145:18–20
