Ugly Words and Ugly Actions

Between the group chat among Republican staffers and the possible new so-called refugee policy, it’s pretty difficult to see the current crop of Republicans as anything else but racist. The content of more than 2,900 pages of messages lays bare anti-Semitic, misogynist, and racist attitudes is truly mind-boggling.

These messages are not by a group of youngsters but adults, who to be part of the Young Republicans must be over 18, moreover, by people many of whom are in elected and policy shaping positions.  Add to that a new “refugee” policy welcoming white South Africans, who for centuries had ruled an apartheid state classifying people into racial categories must be more than upsetting to traditional Republicans who were not racist.

The icing on the cake is the Supreme Court’s shadow docket decision allowing racial profiling by ICE agents.  U.S. citizens are being routinely brutalized and detained solely because they “look” Latino.  We must ask:  what are we becoming?  What have we become?

Prayer for the Day

Searching for the light, O God, often we find only the shadows,

    Failing to do the good we mean to do we acquiesce to evil;

Knowing we fall short of our promise as a Nation,

    We come to you in contrition and ask forgiveness.

Move us from hopelessness to determination

    So we live life more fully as you intended.

In the name of the One who sees us all as equals,

    Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.

Thoughts for the Day

The more the political atmosphere is open and liberating — like it has been with the emergence of Trump and a more right wing GOP even before him — it opens up young people and older people to telling racist jokes, making racist commentaries in private and public.

Propaganda also relies on certain ideals and myths, in this case, the myth of white innocence and white superiority.

 There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
