Unheeded Warnings

Early spring is like this – one day it is absolutely lovely, temperatures reaching into the 60s, then the rain and a cooling down.  But climate scientists are warning us that even this old patterns are changing.  Last week, when Los Angeles and southern California normally would have had temperatures in the 70s, it hit 95 to 97.  But the oil barons who are buying government policies don’t care.  They’re only looking at profits.

We’ve had warnings for over 50 years, back to the first Earth Day in 1970. However, it took until 2015 to have a so-called legally binding agreement, but how was the Paris Climate Agreement to be enforced?  The White House withdrew from the agreement for the second time citing energy concerns. We all know that is an eight letter euphemism for nonsense; it’s all about the money fossil fuel paid to get this president into office.

On his way to Jerusalem, Jesus looked at how greed functioned in his time.  The young rich told what he must do, Scripture tells us, he went away grieving, for he had many possessions. In our journey with Jesus, shouldn’t we call our so-called leadership to task for their reliance on their possessions obtained through the abandonment of a sane climate policy?

Prayer for the Day

Your creation is with us, O God, in so many form,

    From the small clumps of salt grass to the tall sedge;

Life abounds in all manner of growth, O Lord,

   Even when we cannot see the mussels or the cranes.

Teach us to tread softly on your earth and to restore

   What is being damaged by greed and power.

In the name of the One who cares for all life,

   Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.

Thoughts for the Day

We are rapidly approaching multiple Earth system tipping points that could transform our world with devastating consequences for people and nature.

      Tim Lenton, global climate researcher, University of Exeter. England

Stopping this trend is in our hands: studies show that global warming will stop around the time humanity reaches zero CO2 emissions, but it can hardly be reversed. In the current political climate, however, it is quite possible that warming may continue its fast pace or even accelerate further. This much is clear: if the warming rate of the past 10 years continues, the Paris Agreement 1.5°C warming limit will be breached by ∼2030.

Can papyrus grow where there is no marsh?

 Can reeds flourish where there is no water?

    While yet in flower and not cut down, they wither before any other plant/

Such are the paths of all those who forget God;

   The hope of the godless shall perish.

            Job 8: 11-13
