The deportation policy from the White House, spurred by Steven Miller, has created a number of crises, some expected, others not so expected. One unexpected area is in the care of our Nation’s seniors, as many TPS and DACA holders face the possibility of deportation or losing their work permits.
It may be Schadenfreude, but most Trump voters were over 50, and they are the ones will most likely need the immigrants that Steven Miller, the architect of the White House immigration policy wants to deport. Of course, his family came from Eastern European Jews who escaped deadly pogroms, but he forgot all that.
Nevertheless, now his anti-immigrant policies will cost those who voted for Trump as we lose immigrant caregivers in nursing homes and even ritzy “active over 55” residential centers. Then there are the immigrants who scrub hospital floors and take out the trash. As older Americans are turned away from the care they need, those who voted for such policies should remember this is what they voted for.
Prayer for the Day
At this time in summer, our minds are full of lots of things:
As we sometimes crowd out the true purpose of our lives;
Bring us back to remembering who we are as your people,
To not just resolving to do better but to doing better
My we be your instruments in realizing the kingdom,
As we seek to share your promise with the world.
In the name of the One who shares your promise with us,
Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.
Thoughts for the Day
No matter what their job, they are all caregivers. The effect of losing them will be felt by the 4500 seniors we care for each day.
Adam Scott, Executive Director, SeniorLife Boston
I am one of many people wondering whether my [DACA] renewal will arrive in time.
Yadirea Aldana, a RN who oversees 120 other nursing staff
Sow for yourselves righteousness; reap steadfast love, break up your fallow ground;
For it is time to seek the Lord that you may have righteousness rained upon you.
You have plowed wickedness, you have reaped injustice,
You have eaten the fruit of lies.
Because you trusted in your power and the multitude of your warriors,
Therefore the tumult of war shall rise against your people.
Hosea 10: 11-14
