Violence Is Not The Answer

It’s Pentecost, the day when a small frightened group of Jesus’ followers realized that their faith demanded they take on fear and some out boldly, speaking to the truth that was before them in a city occupied by foreign troops, ready to do whatever their Caesar and his functionaries commanded them to do.

We are now called as followers of the One who spoke truth to shake loose our fears and face the Caesars of our time.  But just as the earliest followers eschewed violence, so should we for violence, in the end, solves nothing. Moreover, it only becomes an excuse for the Caesars of our time to ramp up repressive tactics.

How can we deal with the frustration and the anger we feel at ICE raids, detentions at federal buildings, and zip tying children after court hearings?  Deploying National Guard troops is not a solution, and in spite of how upset we are, neither is violence.

Prayer for the Day

Feeling like a people besieged, we cry out to you, O God,

   For we see our neighbors dragged into unmarked vehicles;

Struggling in a violent society, we search for a path, O Lord,

One that reflects the life we are called to live.

Guide us, O Holy One, as we strive to be true to your Gospel,

Even as we try to protect those who live among us..

In the name of the One who is our guide,

Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.

Thoughts for the Day

The federal government is moving to take over the California National Guard and deploy 2,000 soldiers. That move is purposefully inflammatory and will only escalate tensions.

Local authorities are able to access law enforcement assistance at a moment’s notice, and there is no unmet need.   This is the wrong mission and will erode public trust.

California Governor Gavin Newsome, Saturday June 7, 2025

ICE has brought their terror tactics and masked agents to paramount this morning – in my district.  This is unacceptable.  WE will demand answers an accountability.  For those out there – please stay safe, protest peacefully, and KNOW YOUR RIGHTS.

            Nanette Barragan, U.S. Representative (D-CA)

Make me to know your ways, O Lord; teach me your paths.

Lead me in your truth, and teach me,

For you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all day long.

            Psalm 25: 4-5
