We Must Be Better Than This

Reviewing the massive number of posts from immigration attorneys on the deportation defense website, I saw one that was particularly disturbing.  In some immigration courts, persons who show up for hearings on their cases are routinely detained after a judge dismisses their case on a motion from government attorneys.

Once a case is dismissed, the immigrant has no case and can be subject to arrest.  In this matter, an immigration lawyer recorded what happened in the hallway.  As the young mother and her two children ages 9 and 12 were leaving, they were accosted by ICE agents who not only zip-tied the mother but her children as well. You could hear the 9-year old girl screaming and crying as ICE agents pushed them toward an elevator.

Is this what we’ve come to?  Zip-tying children, handling them roughly in an immigration court where they were supposed to be able to argue their case? This is our government, yours and mine, doing such despicable things.  And this is only the beginning.

Prayer for the Day

Reflecting our fears, our actions become shields

     Rather than instruments of healing and love;

Afraid of losing what we think belongs to us,

    We construct fences and boundaries,

Forgive us, Holy Embracer, heal us, and open us to your ways,

    The ways of recognizing the humanity in us all.

In the name of the One who shows us how to live,

    Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.

Thoughts for the Day

Well, habeas corpus is a constitutional right a president has to remove people from this country.

We should be gravely concerned that ICE has been given tacit approval to both detain and deport U.S. citizen children despite the availability and willingness of U.S.-based caregivers who, only because of ICE’s own actions, cannot find or contact them.

For without cause they hid their net for me,

   For without cause they dug a pit for my life.

Let ruin come on them unawares.

   And let the net they hid ensnare them, let them fall in it to their ruin.
