In the musical 1776, three of our Nation’s founder argue about which bird should be our national bird. In spite of Franklin’s arguments for the turkey, a native bird and a source of sustenance, the eagle won out. The eagle was honored more in the breach than in reality because our obsession with pesticides almost drove the poor bird to extinction.
However, here in New Jersey and throughout all the Northeast, eagles are multiplying again. They need good tall trees for their nests; they need streams clean of pesticide residue; they need fish.
To watch an eagle soar and then dive for its supper is a thrilling sight. Thanks to an increased awareness of pesticides and the use of organic products, New Jersey has moved from only one nesting pair in 1970 to at least 222 active nesting pairs today. increase in the eagle population is evidence that we can save wildlife if we only put our minds to it.
Prayer for the Day
The earth sings your praises, O God, and all that is within it,
We marvel at your glory in the heavens and the universe beyond,
For we, the human race you created, are imperfect but striving
To be vessels of your grace and power.
Bring us to that place where we are more truly your servants
Sharing the strength of community with the world.
In the name of the One who came to show us how to live,
Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.
Thoughts for the Day
The real wealth of the Nation lies in the resources of the earth – soil, water, forests, minerals, and wildlife.
- Rachel Carson, environmentalist (1904-1964)
Each species is a masterpiece, a creation assembled with extreme care and genus.
- E.O. Wilson, biologist & naturalist (1929-2021)
You make springs gush forth in the valleys; they flow between the hills,
Giving drink to every wild animal; the wild asses quench their thirst.
By the streams the birds of the air have their habitation; they sing among the branches.
From your lofty abode you water the mountains;
The earth is satisfied with the fruit of your work.
Psalm 104: 10-13
