This past Monday the Supreme Court refused to challenges to state legislation holding fossil fuel companies responsible for environmental damage within their respective states because as the Court put it, there is no federal question. The decision opens the way to holding oil and gas giants responsible for environmental damage.
Suncor, BP, Shell, and Chevron argued that states and municipalities could not sue them for the damage created by their operations. But Monday’s decision said the actions by states are a state issue. This is important here in New Jersey as well as in Massachusetts and Rhode Island, two of the states that want big oil held accountable. Making big oil pay for its damage will help replenish areas destroyed; goodness knows, their profits have been obscene. Hoboken, a city that is at the edge of rising water, now can continue against Exxon and Chevron. There is hope yet to recoup at least some of the costs of climate change.
Prayer for the Day
Fill our doubting hearts with the faith that transforms lives
And bring us into your presence as we care for the earth;
Free us from our old fears that dampen our spirits,
Expanding our vision of what you are and what we can be, So we walk in your ways of justice and righteousness;
Sharing the vision of a better world for all.
In the name of him who has opened a new world,
Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen
Thoughts for the Day
The Supreme Court’s decision today is a significant victory for climate justice and climate lawsuits filed across the United States and around the world. The communities involved in this case suffered unimaginable losses due, to the recklessness and greed of the fossil fuel industry, and now they are one step closer to having their day in court.

Who has put wisdom in the inward parts, or given understanding to the mind?
Who has the wisdom to number the clouds?
Or who can tilt the waterskins of the heavens, when the dust runs into a mass,
And the clods cling together?
