The kid had been gashed by a boat propeller, had part of his flipper bitten off by a shark, and was being attacked by another shark when some fishermen rescued him and contacted Sea Turtle Recovery located in Orange (is that near the beach? I don’t think so.) Located at Turtle Back Zoo, this organization rehabilitates sea turtles.
Named Titan because of what he endured, this Loggerhead will hopefully live out his life span of 70 to 80 years. STR, as it’s known, has several New Jersey turtles in its care: Donashello who had lung lesions and could not migrate south has now recovered; Slater who had a flipper gashed by a power boat at Sandy Hook; and Willow, who was cold stunned and had to be coaxed to eat, now recovered
Titan was among 8 turtles returned to the ocean last week at Point Pleasant Beach. We hope that he will be able to live out is span and find a female when he matures – that will be another 15 to 20 years. Turned loose, he worked his way to the water, the origin of all life God created, and once in, took off.
Prayer for the Day
Deep beneath the water, miracles of God’s creation abound,
From sea turtles to the whelks and fish swimming about;
On the shore small polls pull the tiny sand crab as it burrows in,
And the gulls and terns look for clams and mussels.
Give us grace, O God, to marvel and care for your creation,
As we walk about the sand, full of life we do not even see.
In the name of the One who walked along the shore,
Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen
