For those of us who didn’t think that much on the West Coast was part of our lives, we woke up yesterday morning to the West visiting us in the form of haze.  That ball of fire in the hazy sky in the morning all the way through to the evening was the result of the fires in California, Washington, and Oregon.  And it will probably continue through the day until the rain washes it out.

More than 60 fires are burning in the West. The fire effects will continue to drift east until it dissipates over the water.  The intense heat wave in the West is also being felt by the agricultural workers who pick our lettuce and other fruits and vegetables.  They are being disproportionately affected by the heat.  Imagine picking produce in triple digit heat without water breaks or shelter. And we’ve only had summer for one month.

We are paying the price for greed and shrugging off science. We must find a way to develop a new kind of economic model, one that does not depend on consuming more than we need because at this rate there won’t be much left for the future.

Prayer for the Day

From the ways of self-deception and self-indulgence, O God,

    Turn us aside to come before you and search our hearts;

Move us beyond our preoccupation with our own lives and fortunes

And awaken us to the toll we are taking on the world you gave us.

Turn our hearts and deeds towards the world beyond

So we live life more fully as you intended.

We ask this in the name of him who brings us new life

Even Christ Jesus our Lord.  Amen

Thoughts for the Day

True wealth is not measured in money or status or power. It is measured in the legacy we leave behind for those we love and those we inspire.

            Cesar Chavez, United Farmworkers (1927-1993)

The more clearly we can focus our attention on the wonders and realities of the universe about us, the less taste we shall have for destruction.

            Rachel Carson, environmentalist (1907-1964)

O that you would tear open the heavens and come down,

So that the mountains would quake at your presence –

As when a fire kindles brushwood and the fire causes water to boil –

To make your name known to your adversaries,

So that the nations might tremble at your presence!

            Isaiah 64: 1-2
