It’s March, when many of us start thinking about spring, even as much of our state is still covered in slush, New Jersey’s version of snow – although in North Jersey there was real snow, the kind we should have had in February. The daffodils in my yard seem to have survived Monday night’s storm.

It’s March, when we start to think about walking and hiking – and a time to rejoice in at least one area saved from development, the catchword used for destroying a habitat. Several months ago it looked like the 32-acre site, part of Breton Woods in Brick Township would become another upscale housing development built too close to the Shore, but now a deal has been reached to save this space from the developer’s axe.

The Ocean County Land Trust reached a deal with the Diocese of Trenton which owns the property and the developer for $8.55 million to save this place which also serves as a natural sponge for storm water runoff in addition to being a migratory bird stopover. It’s March and the spring rains will begin – soon.

Prayer for the Day

It hardly seems possible, you who created life around us,
   That we will soon be moving into another season;
Winter, almost over, we catch glimpses of the coming spring,
   Yet we know we may still have Lenten surprises ahead of us.
Grace us, O Holy Creator, with the beauty of the in between,
    As we continue our Lenten journey to its end.
In the name of the One who journeys with us,
    Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.

Thoughts for the Day

This was an encouraging experience to know that the residents of Brick wanted to protect the environment and trees and do not mind tax dollars being used for this global purpose. The rest of the world may be a 'Me First' situation but here in Brick NJ and Ocean County, saving the environment for future generations despite the immediate cost of tax dollars shows the enlightenment of our residents.
     - John C. Ducey, Mayor, Brick Township

If we allow ourselves to be discouraged, we lose our power and momentum. That’s what I would say to you in these difficult times.
     - Margaret Thomas Murie, environmentalist (1902-2003)

The Lord is king, God is robed in majesty; the Lord is robed and girded with strength.
   God has established the earth; it shall never be moved;
