While we and the rest of the world watched and waited for the results of the Presidential election, at least 92,660 persons were diagnosed with coronavirus and 130 persons died from the disease yesterday. Although the death toll is not as great as it was earlier this year, it is still a real threat to us as a people.
No matter who is finally declared the victor in this bruising election, that person must take the science of the disease seriously. The victor must also remember that the results of a tight election call for a message of unity and not division, for harmony and not rancor.
As a Nation, we need to face the fact that the racial and economic divide will only destroy us. As a people, we must look outward, not inward. As Christians, we must continue to work for real change in our society that reflects the true values of our faith: justice, mercy, and peace.
Prayer for the Day
We confess, O Lord, that we are unsettled,
We chafe at the words Jesus telling us to respond
To those who would hurt us with love.
Rejecting as we are rejected, we go through the motions,
Speaking words of reconciliation,
Without meaning in our lives.
Forgive us and open us to the new freedom given us,
In the name of the Model of our lives, `
Even Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen.
Thoughts for the Day
There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest.
Elie Wiesel, Holocaust survivor and writer (1928–2016)
Justice cannot be for one side alone but for both.
Eleanor Roosevelt, humanitarian (1884–1962)
Thus says the Lord of Hosts: Render true judgments,
Show kindness and mercy to one another;
Do not oppress the widow, the orphan, the alien, or the poor;
And do not devise evil in your hearts against one another.
Zechariah 7:9–10
