We all have special days. Those days are often connected to special events. Some are happy, like the birth of a child or grandchild; others are sad, such as the death of a spouse or other loved one. But they are days we really never forget.
On those special days we think about how special events are connected to our lives. When we think about those events, we think about how much has changed, how much we have changed. No longer a young mother with children running about, I am much older and hopefully wiser.
Looking at photographs from the past helps us remember those life changing events and our relationships with the people we love. Photographs of our past, many taken before we were born, helps us to connect to the history that helped make us. We almost wish we could take photographs of the future.
Prayer for the Day
God of memory, we want to hold onto precious times from the past,
For we know they cannot be replicated;
God of the present, we need your guidance as we make decisions
For we know we cannot rely on our own desires alone.
God of our future, grant us wisdom and understanding
So we are able to act as your people in this complex world.
In the name of the One who is our guide,
Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.
Thoughts for the Day
God gave us memory that we might have roses in December.
J.M. Barrie, British writer (1860-1937)
A strange thing is memory, and hope; one looks backward, the other forward; one is of today, the other of tomorrow. Memory is history recorded in our brain, memory is a painter; it paints pictures of the past and of the day.
Grandma Moses, American artist (1860-1961)
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own insight.
In all your ways acknowledge God, for the Lord will make your paths straight.
Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord, and turn away from evil.
Proverbs 3: 5-7
