It just needs to get a little bit colder then I’ll walk the beach. Not in my bare feet, of course, but with my rubber boots. The beach is better in fall and winter. There’s a serenity about it. Or maybe I’ll just stand still and hear the voice of God through the waves lapping at the shore.
The problem with hearing the voice of God is that it’s really difficult to decipher what God is telling us. Sometimes I think God is telling us just to slow down and allow the one thing we don’t expect to enter us. Sometimes, when the waves come in hard I think God is telling us to get moving.
Then sometimes there’s a surprise and we don’t hear what we think we should. And we turn and wonder what it was that we heard. Not what we expected. The voice of God.
Prayer for the Day
Ever new and surprising God, we thank you for the beauty of autumn
For its many colors opens us to the fullness of your creation;
Thinking over this year, we consider uncertain futures
And pray in our hearts that hope will bloom after the winter.
In the name of him who opens us to your Spirit,
Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.
Thoughts for the Day
Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower.
Albert Camus, French Algerian philosopher (1913–1960)
October, baptize me with leaves! Swaddle me in corduroy and nurse me with split pea soup. October, tuck tiny candy bars in my pockets and carve my smile into a thousand pumpkins. O autumn! O teakettle! O grace!
Rainbow Rowell, American writer
You have made the moon to mark the seasons;
the sun knows its time for setting.
You make darkness, and it is night,
when all the animals of the forest come creeping out.
The young lions roar for their prey,
seeking their food from God.
When the sun rises, they withdraw
and lie down in their dens.
Psalm 104:19–22
