What on earth were they thinking? Of course, in their insulated little worlds, the six who agreed that it’s perfectly ok to have a weapon that can fire 800 rounds a minute, killing 60 and wounding almost 400 in a matter of 11 minutes as the killer did at the Pulse. They don’t have to face the realities of the world around them.
And the decision written by Clarence Thomas is simply an eight-letter euphemism for nonsense. .And that’s being polite Saying this is a matter for Congress, that esteemed group of leaders bought and owned by the NRA, we might as well wait for the Second Coming before they act.
Gun violence in America is destroying the lives of thousands of people. In the first four months alone, over 5,000 died in gun-related shootings. Although mass shootings like Uvalde, Walmart, and Sandy Hook are the ones that capture our attention, everyday gun violence is a serious issue. This decision will only put weapons that can cause terrible and extensive harm in the hands of those full of hate.
Prayer for the Day
Remembering the horrors of mass shooting stories,
We cry to you, O God, for respite from narrow minds;
Alarmed at the consequences of court decisions,
We pray that Congress will fulfill their responsibilities.
Give us strength, O Lord, in these perilous times,
And help us to elect leaders who will respond to real needs.
In the name of the One who is our strength,
Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.
Thoughts for the Day
By maintaining a myopic view focused on these mechanisms, the majority puts machine guns back in the hands of the people.
Justice Sonia Sotomayor, dissent in Garland v. Cargill
Last year, there were 39 mass shootings in the United States, the highest number in any year since 2006, according to a Washington Post tracker. Another Post database found school shootings hit 46 in 2022, the most since at least 1999.
Marianne LeVine, in The Washington Post
Give ear to my words, O Lord, give heed to my sighing.
Listen to the sound of my cry, my King and my God, for toyou I pray.
Lord, in the morning you hear my voice;
In the morning I plead my case to you and watch.
Psalm 5: 1-3
