My father was a printer, back in the day when print media used linotypes, those incredibly noisy machines that would drive a hearing person crazy. Of course, he was deaf so the noise didn’t bother him or most of his co-workers, who were also deaf. He worked for the Government Printing Office (GPO), and every night he would come home and we would talk about what was in the Federal Register or Congressional Record.
The Federal Register publishes notices of government regulations, proposed and final. It is really dreary reading. Tucked away on April 2, is the USPS proposal to amend the kinds of firearms that can be shipped by mail. Goody! Now we can get the weapons to kill people delivered to our doors.
New Jersey AG Davenport and 22 other Attorneys General are opposing this easing of firearm shipping. The DOJ claim is that a restriction on the Congressional limits on the us of USPS to ship weapons is unconstitutional. This is nothing more than the gun lobby trying to circumvent any limits on its sales to domestic abusers and potential killers. Where do your elected members stand? Call or email their offices and find out.
Prayer for the Day
Praying for an end to gun violence, O God,
We wonder how and why guns are so available;
Feeling like our concerns are nothing, O Lord,
We ask why the gun lobby has such power.
Awaken us, O Holy One, so we call legislators to task,
So guns are not so easily obtainable.
In the name of the One who empowers us,
Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.
Thoughts for the Day
The federal government’s refusal to follow a century-old common sense firearm safety law threatens the rule of law and public safety. Turning the Postal Service into a tool to ship guns into our states, in violation of our laws, will make it more difficult to keep guns out of the hands of felons and other dangerous people. And it will make it harder for law enforcement to solve gun crimes. The U.S. Postal Service should follow federal law, instead of undermining the safety of our families.
NJ AG Jennifer Davenport, in filing lawsuit to block the changes
Congress enacted Section 1715 in 1927 to restrict the mailing of concealable firearms through the Postal Service, to “avoid having the Post Office serve as an instrumentality for the violation of local laws which prohibited the purchase and possession of weapons” and “to make it more difficult for criminals to obtain concealable weapons.
From public comment letter on proposed changes
Do not envy the violent and do not choose any of their ways;
For the perverse are an abomination to the Lord,
But the upright are in the countenance of God..
