Let’s see. The Strait of Hormuz, which accounts for about 20 percent of oil shipments, upon which the world depends, is closed to traffic. Electricity prices have increased, possibly or primarily due to AI data centers, depending on your political perspective. And in the midst of all this the federal government is using your tax dollars and mine to stop offshore wind development, a sustainable source of energy.
What else in a time of energy need? Farmers in the Midwest who could not make a living farming turned to setting up solar energy farms and now the feds have shorted them, not paying on contracts the government signed.
And there’s even more. Just to make sure there is no dissent, the President just fired the entire board that oversees the National Science Foundation. In the meantime, our U.S. trained scientists, energy experts, and others are going elsewhere, Canada, France, Germany, the Nordic countries where science is not beholden to ideology.
Prayer for the Day
You created us sentient creatures, O God,
Beings to ask questions and search for answers;
You created us to seek wisdom in what we do,
But often we fall to old myths and fears.
Grant us, O Lord, the imagination to see beyond ourselves,
And the wisdom to use our knowledge for the good of others.
In the name of the One who asked questions,
Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.
Thoughts for the Day
I am deeply disappointed, though I cannot say I am entirely surprised. I have watched the systematic dismantling of the scientific advisory infrastructure of this government with growing alarm, and the National Science Board is simply the latest casualty.
Willie E. May, President, Morgan State University
It’s fundamental science that directs much of the discovery, which leads to innovation and to products that make it into the marketplace
Roger Beachy, Biology Professor Emeritus, Washington University, St. Louis
Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge,
But those who hate to be rebuked are stupid
Fools think their own way is right,
But the wise listen to advice.
