Yesterday, Januayry1, 1892, 17-year old Annie Moore walked down the gang plank wither two younger brothers and became the first person to enter the new immigration center at Ellis Island, built to accommodate the millions of immigrants streaming to our shores for freedom and opportunity. Without their contributions we would not be the nation we are now.
Today DHS is launching a $100 million drive targeted at gun-rights supporters and military enthusiasts to “repel foreign invaders,” with ads on Rumble, a right-wing website, and recruitment at gun shows and NASCAR races. A far cry from the world Annie faced when she arrived.
Congress authorized $30 billion in its actions last summer. Aren’t there better ways to spend the that kind of money? Perhaps in childhood education, health care, not to mention nutrition programs. And, of course, our environment could use a little financial support. In this new year, we celebrate the 250th anniversary of our independency, as John Adams called it. Will our priorities will be as a Nation be for the common good?
Prayer for the Day
Holy Power of our lives, as we face a new year,
We are uncertain where to turn or what to believe;
Having been given the ability to think, discern, and decide,
We look to you for guidance in our daily lives,
Knowing it is often found in the most unlikely of places.
Embrace and guide us as we strive to live your Gospel
As did the One we follow,
Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.
Thoughts for the Day
The choice we face is broader than politics, deeper than charity. It is whether we see the world chiefly as property to be controlled, defined by walls and fences that must be built ever higher, ever thicker, ever tougher; or made up chiefly of an open weave of compassion and connection.
Rabbi Arthur Waskow, American author, activist (1933-2025)
All guests who arrive should be received as Christ, for he himself said: For I was a stranger and you welcomed me”
Saint Benedict of Nursia (480-547)
Turn, O Lord, how long? Have compassion on your servants!
Satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love,
So that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.
Psalm 90: 13-24
