Yesterday the Newark Star Leger announced that it will cease its print edition as of February 2, 2025, shifting everything to its online service. This is really sad for several reasons. First, every morning I go to court, I take the sports page and give it to one of the building security officers who really appreciate sharing the stories.
It’s also sad because there are many persons who don’t have access to cell phones or computers to read the reporting. Local newspapers are a way to keep in touch with what is happening locally. The news, the real news, not social media misinformation, will suffer as a result of this decision.
One can claim that the world has changed from print to digital, but there is something different in holding a printed page in your hand, whether it’s a book or a newspaper. Sad, very, very sad because New Jersey will suffer as a result.
Prayer for the Day
In the midst of uncertain times, we come to you, O God,
Hoping that you will give us a framework for our future;
In a world that is changing too quickly, we look for certainty,
Searching for the moorings that will anchor the boat of our lives.
Expand our vision, O Source of imagination, so we live beyond our fears,
And bestow on us your grace so we can commit ourselves to your vision,
In the name of him who offered us a new vision of life,
Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.
Thoughts for the Day
It's so much darker when a light goes out than it would have been if it had never shone.”
John Steinbeck, from The Winter of Our Discontent (1902-1968)
Life seems sometimes like nothing more than a series of losses, from beginning to end. That's the given. How you respond to those losses, what you make of what's left, that's the part you have to make up as you go.
Katharine Weber, American writer, from The Music Lesson
The Lord exists forever; your word is firmly fixed in heaven.
Your faithfulness endures to all generations;
You have established the earth and it stands fast
By your appointment they stand today, for all things are your servants.
Psalm 119: 89-91
