Greenland, Again

There’s no question that Europe has some serious concerns and faces some serious challenges in light of the Russian invasion of Ukraine Wondering if it can continue to rely on America as a staunch ally, many of the countries are looking to reshape their relationship with the United States.  And who can blame them?

NATO was born out of our American concern regarding Soviet expansionism, seeing Europe as a bulwark against Stalin. Although many now see it as a way to protect Europe we should not forget the real threat that Russia still is.  The NATO Summit is supposed to be a time of coming together, not one of division.

So what does the President harp on besides the fact that he is not the center of attention?  Greenland.  Fortunately, his bluster then gave way to some modicum of praise and an agreement with Ukraine on Patriot missiles. Also, fortunately, there were members of the Congress in Istanbul as an assurance to more reasonable leaders.

Prayer for the Day

We are troubled by what we see around us, O God,

And we find ourselves wondering if you hear our prayers.

We have become anxious and fearful of the world around us

For events impinge on our hearts and minds.

Help us to understand that in spite of all, you are here

To give us hope and strength in a time of despair.

In the name of the One who opens our eyes and minds,

Even Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.

Thoughts for the Day

There are three kinds of patriots, two bad, one good. The bad ones are the uncritical lovers and the loveless critics. Good patriots carry on a lover’s quarrel with their country, a reflection of God’s lover’s quarrel with the world.

Rev. William Sloane Coffin, activist preacher (1924-2006)

We have forgotten that democracy must live as it thinks and think as it lives.

Agnes Meyer, American writer and social worker  (1887-1970)

In my distress I cry to the Lord that I may receive an answer:

“Deliver me, O Lord, from lying lips and a deceitful tongue!”

                        Psalm 120: 1-2
